Evolution at Art Verona 2020, Surfing with Satoshi now available (again!), and a few more updates
Evolution @ Art Verona 2022
(⁄ ⁄◕⁄‿⁄◕⁄ ⁄✿) I’ve been invited to curate the “Evolution” section of Art Verona, a small yet brave art fair in Italy, that will take place from October 14 to 16, 2022. Evolution’s focus is on artists working with technologies, but in October 2022, a few days after the passing of Bruno Latour, 6 years and 283 days left to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees, evolution means, I believe, giving up with the dichotomy culture vs nature, human vs non-human, and with any idea of science-driven progress, technology-driven innovation. Evolution means hybridation, adaptation, learning from nature, questioning the present and exploring alternative timelines.
Although curating an art fair section is not just like making a show, I’m proud and heartened to see this view shared by the galleries and the artists on show. Evolution consists of six Italian galleries, presenting solo shows or small group exhibits. The Gallery Apart (Rome) offers a solo show with recent works by Marco Strappato, including a series of prints in which stock landscape photography is postproduced to a level that makes the subject unrecognizable, and turns these rather conventional images into mysterious fragments of a lunar landscape. Virginia Bianchi Gallery (Bologna) combines in a single environment the work of French artist Léa Porré and the duo Xenoangel (Marija Avramović e Sam Twidale), both concerned with alternative future pasts, speculative fiction and hybridization between the technological and the organic. Hosted by Gallleriapiù (Bologna), Emilio Vavarella presents a selection of works, most notably a number of abstract tapestries produced with a 19th century Jacquard loom, and translating sections of his DNA into a pattern that can potentially be (re)converted into genetic code (thus working both as a self portrait and a DNA bank). The machine gaze is explored by Galleria Michela Rizzo and Marignana Arte (Venice) in a joint booth displaying recent works by Quayola, who portrays the natural environment as seen by high-precision laser scanners and ultra-high-definition cameras, and Matthew Attard, who employs eye-tracking technology to explore embodiment and contemporary drawing. MLZ Art Dep (Trieste) presents works by Camilla Alberti, Vincenzo Marsiglia and The Cool Couple: three very different propositions sharing a common interest into the deep time of natural history and the archeology of the present. Finally, Cortesi Gallery (Milan) introduces its brainchild C-Verso, a Web3 platform for generative art, by displaying prints by US based artist ippsketch, who makes abstract drawings with a palette inspired by Werner's Nomenclature of Colors (1814), a book that served as a classification guide before photography became commonplace and was used by Charles Darwin during his exploratory voyages. Live minting will be available at the booth, to allow visitors to familiarize with the processes of on-chain generative codes. See you in Verona!

Surfing with Satoshi now available (again!)
໒( ̿・ ᴥ ̿・ )ʋ The beautiful pink limited edition of Surfing with Satoshi. Art, Blockchain and NFTs, published by Aksioma - Institute for Contemporary Art, Ljubljana, and designed by Superness, is sold out, but you can still find the book thanks to Postmedia Books, which along with the first Italian edition (2021) released the updated and revised English translation in early September. Check it out on Amazon!
૮ ⚆ﻌ⚆ა If you think it's too late to read a book on NFTs written between 2021 and early 2022, please allow me to persuade you with a few appraisals. Right Click Save recently described Surfing with Satoshi as a “groundbreaking new book”. On the Dirt newsletter, Terry Nguyen presents Surfing with Satoshi as “a standout example of a book that lands at the intersection of art and technology”, adding: “Its strength comes from Quaranta’s ability to ground the NFT craze within the broader history of modern art.” And Brian Droitcour wrote on Outland: “Quaranta’s account... sets a high bar for others that will follow. Surfing with Satoshi is the only book of its kind: an attempt by a single author to weave a motley array of histories - of art movements, markets, technologies, and critiques - into a coherent narrative.”
♥*♡∞:。.。 If you still don't want to make Jeff Bezos wealthier and to waste trees, you might be interested in a short text I published in The Book of X. 10 Years of Computation, Communication, Aesthetics & X, an anthology of texts and images celebrating the 10th anniversary of the international conference xCoAx, available for free download and in printed form (free – you pay only the postage). It's titled “How Can Art Exist on a Distributed Ledger?” and it's only twelve pages long.
Coming soon...
໒( ̿・ ᴥ ̿・ )ʋ This is where you will find me lecturing and discussing along the next couple of months. On October 22, 2022, I will be in Venice to discuss NFTs at the Uzbekistan National Pavilion with Silvia Dal Dosso, Ryder Ripps, Maria Paula Fernandez among others. On November 12, 2022 I will head to Ljubljana to moderate a round table as part of the event From Commons to NFTs, bringing together artists, hackers and researchers to critically examine the shift in digital culture from open sharing to crypto-based forms of ownership. On November 22, at Fondazione Feltrinelli in Milan, I will take part in Creating with Blockchain, a panel discussion on the impact of blockchains on media, communication and the arts. Finally, on December 2 - 3 I will be in Bruxelles for the new edition of The Future of Living conference, addressing the future of Artificial Intelligence in our living environment, cities, communities, and culture.

Evolution @ Art Verona 2022
Ci vediamo a Verona!

Si intitola "How Can Art Exist on a Distributed Ledger?" ed è lungo solo dodici pagine.
