Torino Foto Festival presents All These Fleeting Perfections, a collective exhibition by Domenico Quaranta realized in the premises of the Biblioteca Geisser in collaboration with Artissima and some of the exhibiting galleries. The exhibition - which is part of the program EXPOSED PRELUDE - anticipates some of the themes that will be deepened by the new International Photography Festival of the city of Turin, which will take place from May 2nd to June 2nd, 2024 with the title New Landscapes – Nuovi Paesaggi under the art direction of Menno Liauw and Salvatore Vitale.
All These Fleeting Perfections collects photographs, videos, installations, and paintings which investigate the post-photographic dimension, or that complex persistence of the representation of a way to relate to the real in the images, of which photography has been and still is the clearest expression. Therefore the “fleeting perfections” mentioned in the title are the “ways of seeing”, outdated but never completely surmountable, that helped to define the very essence of photography over time.
All These Fleeting Perfections
October 27 - November 5, 2023 - Free Entry
PRESENTATION: 3 November 2023, from 10am to 1pm
Biblioteca Geisser – Corso Casale 5, Turin (Italy)
Hours: Every day from 3pm to 10pm
November 5th from 3pm to 8pm
“The survival of photography as a means is not the useless aggressiveness used when we nostalgically cultivate outdated shooting and development - emphasizes the curator Domenico Quaranta - but in how key functions of photography, such as the objective documentation of the world and memory, are kept alive by those very technicalities that in other ways deny it, not only in its social and institutional uses, but also through satellite images, AI data, scientific images, 3-D scans, images generated by self-driving cars. Once again photography lives on in the evocation of the photographic gaze in other media, from paintings to CGIs. This is also true in the use of archive photography; in how artefacts of the photographic medium - such as the pixels in Bitmap images - are perceived as a sign of authenticity, and explicit post production as a sign of forgery.”
Through a selection that presents, alongside essential moments of contemporary reflection on the photographic medium as jpegs by Thomas Ruff, the most recent experiments with artificial intelligence by Anna Ridler, some historical contributions such as Autoportrait aux orchidées (1939) by Claude Cahun, and projects that see photography converting into ephemeral and only occasionally visible data streams as in the works by Eva and Franco Mattes and David Horvitz, the exhibition reveals how, during the last century, photography has irremediably influenced our way of dealing with issues such as the relationship between representation and reality, truth and simulation, archive and memory, memory and oblivion.
The exhibition is completed by a large section dedicated to the portrait, identified as one of the forms in which photography as a “standard” of the representation has established itself with greater evidence, irremediably marking the developments of this practice through other media, from painting to CGI, and influencing the image of the “family of the man” that the present delivers to posterity.
All These Fleeting Perfections deals with the nostalgia of photography not as a painful return to an obsolete medium, but as a complex and contradictory survival of a function.

જ⁀➴ Theo Triantafyllidis: Sisyphean Cycles, the opening exhibition I curated for Spazio Vitale in Verona, Italy, has been a blast, and we are working to extend it until January 6, 2024, in order to make it more accessible to international audiences. Meanwhile, I’m happy to start sharing some installation views, that can be browsed in this press folder (photo Michela Pedranti).
The exhibition brings together, for the first time in a single set-up, four simulations by Theo Triantafyllidis, guiding the viewer through an articulated and compelling narrative journey, and into as many ecosystems-worlds, programmed by the artist in such a way as to modify themselves according to autonomous behavior.
Significant examples of world building, a creative practice that is the subject of growing interest in both the artistic, philosophical and literary spheres, Theo Triantafyllidis' live simulations are simulation software that bring to life immersive digital environments, sometimes automated, sometimes interactive, that can take various forms and adapt to different displays (from virtual reality to augmented reality to video installation); “in vitro simulations,” complete systems that the viewer can, from time to time, observe with scientific coolness or actively manipulate.
Triantafyllidis engages this medium both to critically narrate contemporary reality, highlighting the individual and social consequences of communication technologies on human beings; and to simulate alternative realities that start from radically different conditions.
